Akoya, Tahitian, South Sea: A Field Guide

By Mira Halden6 min readApril 22, 2026

Four waters, four characters. How to choose the pearl that echoes how you actually want to feel.

Most pearl guides describe types by size and origin. We think about them by temperament — because the pearl you'll wear for forty years should feel like something, not just look like something.

Akoya — The Quiet Professional

Cultivated in the cool waters of Japan's Mie Prefecture. Small (6–9mm), perfectly round, mirror-bright. Classic, composed, never overdressed. The pearl you wear to a first meeting you care about.

Tahitian — The Night Swimmer

French Polynesia's warm lagoons. 8–14mm, deep-toned — charcoal, forest, peacock, the very specific black that is never just black. Dramatic without trying. The pearl you wear when the mood calls for less fabric, more presence.

South Sea — The Quiet Statement

Australia and the Philippines. The largest and rarest (10–18mm), in satiny white or honey gold. Slow to grow, generous in scale. The pearl you inherit, or begin a collection with.

Freshwater — The Everyday Friend

China's lakes and rivers. Varied shapes — round, baroque, ringed — in pinks, lavenders, peaches. Generous-hearted, approachable, strong on nacre. The pearl you can wear to every single thing.

How to Actually Choose

If you are buying your first fine pearl: Akoya. If you want your jewellery to feel slightly subversive: Tahitian. If it's an inheritance piece: South Sea. If you want a pearl that doesn't demand an occasion: Freshwater.
