Teardrop (also called drop) pearls form when the nucleus inside the oyster rolls slightly during cultivation — producing a pearl with one rounded end and one tapered end. They are significantly rarer than round pearls because symmetric teardrops require exceptional conditions, and they carry a strong visual presence on any neckline.

This 12–13mm teardrop is a South Sea golden, grown in the Pinctada maxima oyster in northern Australia or the Philippines. The warm gold body colour is natural — pigment from the oyster's lip, not a dye treatment.

A teardrop pendant wears differently than a round one — the tapered form points downward, lengthening the neckline. At 45cm it sits at the collarbone; the pendant drop adds another 20–25mm visually.

  • V-neck and scoop-neck tops — the teardrop echoes the line of the neckline
  • Collared shirts — over an open collar, quietly elevates an everyday blouse
  • Evening — against bare collarbone or a silk top, the warmth of the pearl pops

Pull the 40–45cm slider to sit higher or lower depending on neckline.

  • Wipe the pearl (not the silver) with a soft cloth after each wear
  • Polish the sterling silver chain and clasp separately with a silver cloth — skin oils will tarnish silver over months
  • Store the necklace flat in the pouch — teardrops scratch at the tapered end most easily
  • Avoid perfume, chlorine, saltwater, and cosmetic contact
  • Never ultrasonic or steam

For Every You

The Echovelle Story

The Rarest Pearl Shape, Worn Daily

Teardrop is what happens when a pearl nucleus rolls under water for three years — unplanned, unique, never the same twice.
Grown, Not CarvedThe Gold Is In The OysterA Pendant For Everyday Presence

Grown, Not Carved

Unlike mabe or other half-pearls, a teardrop is fully round in nucleus — the drop form emerges as the oyster lays nacre unevenly over time. The tapered end is entirely natural, never carved or shaped after harvest.
